Crockpot swiss steak

Whenever we are craving comfort food, I make this delicious Crockpot Swiss Steak. It has the best combination of flavors and tastes amazing. The tomato, onions and bell peppers give the beef such wonderful flavor.

Everything is slow cooked to perfection. You can use a cheaper cut of meat and still have the best meal. It tastes like the sort of meal you would have for Sunday dinner but it’s easy enough for weeknights or the perfect for your Valentines Day Menu.

Why is it called swiss steak?

Swiss steak is a tougher cut of meat that is cooked for an extended amount of time and braised or cooked until tender. It refers to the process of making these tough cuts of meat tender.

Can I use a different cut of meat?

The recipe calls for round steak but you can use beef chuck steak as well. Really any type of inexpensive steak will work.

Can you over cook meat in a slow cooker?

Yes. Cooking meat too long can cause it to become tough and have the opposite effect. You want to cook it long enough to make it tender but not so long that it gets tough.

Can you put raw steak in a slow cooker?

You certainly can. This is another way that the crock pot helps to save time and make dinner easy.

Let’s make swiss steak crock pot recipe!

Ingredients for slow cooker swiss steak recipe:

  • Round Steaks
  • Flour
  • Salt and black pepper
  • Minced Garlic
  • Olive Oil
  • Beef Broth
  • Petite Diced Tomatoes
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Onion, Diced into Large Chunks
  • Green Bell Pepper, Diced into Large Chunks

How to make swiss steak:

Shake the steaks in flour in a gallon size zip lock bag to coat the steaks thoroughly with the flour.

Heat the olive oil in a large sauce pan on medium high heat.  Cook the steaks on each sides until slightly brown (approximately 3-5 minutes on each side).

If you have a Ninja cooker, you can just do everything in the same pot. We love these because you can brown the meat in the same slow cooker for recipes that call for that.

Next, transfer the steaks to the crock pot if you are using a skillet.

Put the remaining ingredients in the crock pot.  Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until the steak is tender.

Serve over mashed potatoes and enjoy!

This was an excellent recipe. I did change up a few things to make it more flavorful. After browning the steaks, I poured the broth in the same pan to deglaze along with the peppers garlic, Worcestershire and onions. Let them cook for about 5 minutes then transferred it all, along with the diced tomatoes in the crockpot.served it over mashed potatoes! No leftovers! Thanks for a Stella recipe. This is definitely a keeper.
