How to Make Red Wine Steak Marinade

  • Step 1. Combine the ingredients. Mix together all the marinade ingredients in a small bowl. 
  • Step 2. Store in a bag. Place the steaks in a large zip lock bag.  Pour the marinade on top of the bag.  Remove the air and seal.

How to Grill Steaks

  • Step 1. Preheat the grill. Preheat the grill over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).  Let the steaks sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes prior to grilling.  
  • Step 2. Grill the steaks. Place steaks on a hot grill and cook for 3 to 5 minutes depending on your Steak Doneness preference.
  • Step 3. Flip and continue to cook. Flip the steak over and grill for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until steak is cooked to your preference.
  • Step 4. Allow to rest. Remove from the grill and allow to rest a minimum of 5 minutes before cutting or serving.

How to Cook Steaks on the Stovetop

  • Step 1. Prepare your cast iron. Preheat the pan for about 5 minutes.
  • Step 2. Add oil to the pan. Make sure the oil thoroughly coats the bottom of the cast iron skillet.
  • Step 3. Place the steak in the pan. Allow to cook several minutes on each side depending on how you prefer your steak cooked.
  • Step 4. Remove from pan. Take the steak out of the pan. Allow to rest for 5 minutes before cutting. After the steaks rest, serve and enjoy this delicious, marinated steak.

Recipe Tips Marinating Steak

  • Tenderize. Red wine will tenderize the steak but it needs to marinate for at least 2 hours or up to overnight. Do not leave it longer than that or it will actually make it tough.
  • Gallon bag. Place the marinade and steak inside a gallon size ziplock bag. Clean up is easy and you can toss the bag when you are done.

What Should the Internal Temperature of Steak Be?

The best way to test for doneness is by inserting an instant read thermometer into the thickest part of the steak. Do this through the side, not the top of the steak.

Internal temperatures:

  • Rare – 120F, cool to warm red center
  • Medium Rare – 130F, Warm red center
  • Center is Medium – 140F, Hot pink center
  • Medium Well – 150F, Mostly brown center
  • Well Done – 160F, full brown in color

Tips For Grilling Steaks

  • Room temperature. Allow the steaks to come to room temperature before grilling. This will allow the steaks to cook evenly.
  • Hot grill. Prepare the grill before placing the steaks on it. It needs to be hot and the grates coated in oil.
  • Watch closely. Don’t walk away or do something else while grilling steak. They should be watched closely and not flipped too much.
  • Use a spatula. Flip the steaks using a spatula instead of a fork. The fork will pierce the meat and allow the flavorful juices to escape.
  • Allow to rest. Let the steaks rest for several minutes.
