Expert Tips
- Searing Chicken – Sear chicken on medium heat so it gets a nice sear and a golden crust. You want to use the brown bits to add flavor to the creamy gravy so be careful that it does not turn black.
- Preparing Chicken – Slice chicken so it is about the same size. This will ensure that it cooks evenly and about the same time.
- Make Ahead – If you prefer, you can make this recipe ahead of time and store in the fridge. Make sure to store the gravy with the chicken which will prevent it from drying out.
Variations Ideas
- Chicken – This dish can be made with boneless skinless chicken thighs or chicken tenders.
- Add Vegetables – Another great addition is to add in fresh spinach or slice mushrooms. You may even want to squeeze fresh lemon juice for a delicious refreshing flavor.
- Spices – If you prefer a little heat add in ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes.
What to Serve with Creamy Garlic Chicken?
- Best Mashed Potatoes – This is a classic side dish recipe and even better topped with the creamy sauce.
- Pasta – Serve with any type of pasta that you prefer. We recommend penne, fettuccini, or linguine.
- Vegetables – We love to serve with Sautéed Green Beans, Oven Roasted Asparagus, Parmesan Roasted Broccoli or Roasted Zucchini. Side salad is also a great side dish.
- Rice – Another easy side dish is to pair this skillet chicken with Instant pot White Rice Recipe, Microwave Brown Rice or Cauliflower Rice for a low carb option.
- Crusty Bread – I love to add a side of Homemade Garlic Bread to make sure I get every last drop of the creamy gravy.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can use milk but the sauce will not be as thick or rich. If you only have milk, we recommend using whole milk instead of skim milk. If you need a dairy free option, use coconut milk.
If your sauce is to thin, allow the sauce mixture to simmer uncovered in the skillet until it thickens. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
Storage and Reheating Tips
- Storing – Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Freezing – We do not recommend freezing this creamy garlic chicken as the sauce will separate as the mixture thaws.
- Reheating – Reheat the leftovers in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through.
