How Long to Cook a Ham in the Slow Cooker

  • Cook on Low – Once you have placed your ham in the crock pot set it on low. It will need to cook for about 3-4 hours. Cook time could vary.
  • Use Meat Thermometer – To ensure that you ham is heated thoroughly you can use a meat thermometer. It will need to read around 140 degrees.
  • Remove From Slow Cooker – Once heated thoroughly, remove ham from crockpot and place on a platter.
  • Heat Juices – I like to pour the juice that is in the bottom of my crockpot into a saucepan. Then bring the juices to a simmer for about 6-8 minutes.
  • Pour Juices – Then pour the juices over the ham. Doing this just brings all the juices and ham together.
  • Thicker Glaze – If you prefer a thicker glaze. You can mix about 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 2-3 tablespoon of water together. Then pour into the ham juice.

What if My Ham Doesn’t Fit

If you cannot put the lid down on your crockpot. Cover the ham with foil to keep the heat in. Then place the lid on the top to keep the foil down.

Slow cooker ham is the best way to go… But one pro tip. I tried getting fancy and using fresh pineapple. The acid and the pineapple made the ham mush. So make sure you use canned instead of fresh.

From what I have gathered, canned pineapple is heated up which dissolve some of the enzymes that would break down the ham.

      2. Carrie Barnard says:

Oh great tip Andy! Thank you so much for sharing!

  18. Sydne says:

Made this over Christmas for the first time. It was the best , most flavorful, moist ham ever. Question: if you pour the pineapple juice over the brown sugar, won’t it wash it off the ham? Q2: if the ham is to tall for the lid to fit, can you cover with foil

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes I cover it with foil. You can pour the pineapple juice over the top of the ham first if you would like.

  21. Brianne says:

I am making this Easter but wondering has anyone made this with syrup and honey? If so, which one was better?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I have made it both ways and I like honey best. But… syrup is delicious too

      1. Jennifer Vine says:

How would you adjust this recipe for a 12 lb spiral ham?

      2. Carrie Barnard says:

Jennifer – Make sure that it’s completely covered in the crock pot (add foil if needed) to keep the heat in and then cook on low for 5-6 hours. All spiral hams are pre-cooked so you’re just wanting to make sure that it’s heated through so make sure it’s all warmed before serving. I hope you enjoy it.

  40. Joel says:

Just finished Christmas dinner using this recipe. Have never cooked a spiral ham before and we had our concerns about using a crock pot. As we have found out using a smoker, low and slow is the way to go. It more than met our expectations and now we have enough left overs for dinner on New Years Eve.

You also received a paws up from our four legged friend. Thank you for posting.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I’m so glad Joel – Thank you for sharing and I hope you had a wonderful Christmas!

This recipe looks solid. When it comes to ham at my table, it’s always my area of experimentation. Honey with apple juice; maple syrup with pineapple juice. I have even used mango juice before with brown sugar. No matter how it turns out and what the reaction is on the table, ham can always be used in many ways as a leftover, so I don’t freak out too much if it’s not well-received. There’s always something else on the holiday table to supplement, and, like I said, ham sandwiches, omelettes, hash is on the menu for the next week for sure!

  192. Patsy says:

  265. Diane “Dee” M Zimmermann says:

I forgot to mention that we always have a Turkey on Thanksgiving. We roast ours in a brown paper bag, (completely rub in butter or EVOO, stuffed), pinned closed and placed on a rack. Roast the turkey in a 325° oven for 15 minutes per pound and then +45 minutes at the end. Do not open the bag while it is cooking. An example is a 16 pound turkey would cook for four and three-quarter hours or a 20 pound turkey would cook for five and three-quarter hours.

I made two different types of ham. #1 is preheat oven to 325°. Place ham fat side up at a rack in an open shallow roasting pan. Insert meet some amateur so tip is in the center of the thickest part of the meat. It does not touch bone.
Do not add water do not based do not cover. Roast meat for 35 to 40 minutes per pound. Half an hour before the ham is done removed from the oven. Poured drippings from the pan, remove any skin and score the fat surface of ham lightly, cutting uniform, diamond shapes insert whole cloves in each score Pat, or brush on your choice of glazes and return to the oven and continue baking 30 minutes longer. Internal temperature of finished ham should be 160°.

I make my ham by putting it on a large piece of foil in a very large pan about 2 to 3 inches deep. I cover the ham with crushed pineapple (and Juices), light brown sugar to cover Pack it down to the ham) and then pour a coke over all of it. Seal the foil around the ham and place about 1″ of water in the bottom of the pan. Place in a 300 degree oven and bake for about 3 hours. AMAZING!!!!!

I have been using a very similar recipe to this for years. I prefer using honey instead of maple syrup and sticking cloves and pineapple rings onto the ham. Traditionally I use this at Christmas time but this year we have many guests so it’s necessary to offer both turkey and ham to ensure everyone had enough to eat. This will be the first time we use the crockpot method. We are looking forward to having the extra oven space available for guests’ potluck casserole warm-ups.

  305. Bayushi to says:

This sounds so good that I am making this in a couple of days on Thanksgiving. Since none of my housemates sound enthusiastic about turkey.
