Does ice cream cake have cake in it?
Not all ice cream cakes are made the same! A traditional ice cream cake has cake layered between the ice cream layers and is toped with your favorite type of icing like cream cheese icing.
However, there are some ice cream cakes that are made completely of ice cream in the shape of a cake.
Honestly, I love them both. This cookies and cream ice cream cake does not have caked layered in and is made mostly of ice cream. I love making this for a summer holiday or to celebrate a summer birthday as I can whip it up in no time at all!
What is needed to make Oreo Ice Cream Cake?
You guys are not going to believe how easy it is to make this simple but amazing dessert.
All you need are 3 ingredients!
- Half Gallon of Vanilla Ice Cream
- 1 package of Oreos (15.5 oz)
- 1 8 oz Container of Cool Whip
Even though there are only 3 ingredients, the combination of these ingredients makes this cookies and cream ice cream cake delicious and a total crowd pleaser!
Ok, enough talk about how good this is, let’s get started on how to make this great ice cream cake recipe.
How to make this Oreo ice cream cake recipe:
First, I place the ice cream on the counter so that it will soften a little bit. The ice cream is easier to spread once it’s slightly melted.
Then, take all the Oreos expect for approximately 12 (this is one row in a traditional pack of Oreos). Put these Oreos in a gallon size freezer bag. Next pound them slightly with a mallet or rolling pin to crush up the Oreos.
This is the fun part. Make sure you get the kids involved as they love getting to crush the Oreos!
Then lay the crushed up Oreos in the bottom of a 9X13 pan and spread them out evenly.
Once the vanilla ice cream has softened, spoon the ENTIRE half gallon of ice cream over the crushed Oreos in the pan and get it as even as possible. Don’t stress out to much here, just get it spread out as much as possible.
Then place the pan in the freezer for approximately one hour to allow the ice cream to harden.
Once the ice cream has frozen fully, remove the pan from the freezer and top with the entire container of the cool whip. This creates a delicious whipped topping for this cake. Yummy!
Next take the remaining 12 Oreos and crush them in a freezer bag. Then top the cool whip with these Oreos for a decorative top layer.
Finally, place the pan back in the freezer for at least two hours until the cake has fully hardened.
How do you serve this Oreo ice cream cake recipe?
When you are ready to serve this Oreo cookie ice cream cake allow it to sit on the counter for approximately 5 minutes so that it will soften slightly making it easier to cut and serve!
Enjoy! I always store the leftovers in the freezer covered with plastic wrap so that it doesn’t completely melt.
