Ingredients - chicken breast, green beans, shredded cheese, bacon, russet potatoes, ranch seasoning mix, and butter

How to Make Bacon Ranch Chicken Foil Packet

  • Step 6 – Place on the grill over medium high heat or an campfire.
  • Step 7 – Open the foil packets carefully and enjoy dinner.

Expert Tips

  • Foil – You will want to use heavy duty foil for a foil pack so it won’t break when you are grilling. You can use regular foil but I recommend you double wrap it to avoid it breaking in the oven.
  • Prepare Vegetables – To cut the potatoes in bite sized pieces, we recommend using a mandoline slicer.

How do you Fold a Foil Packet?

Place the sheets of heavy-duty foil on a flat surface. Just fold up each of the sides of foil to seal edges. You now have a foil pack ready to go.

Finally, put the foil pack on the grill or a campfire. Just be careful when you open the packets. Serve and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions

How to Store Leftover Chicken Foil Packets

Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The leftovers will last about 3-4 days. Reheat in the oven or take the chicken and potatoes out of the foil and reheat in the microwave.

How to Bake in the Oven

Just make each foil pack as normal. However, instead of putting them on the grill, place them on a baking sheet. Then place in the oven and bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees. Carefully open and enjoy! It goes great with grilled corn on the cob.

I would cook it the same amount of time – but flipping regularly.

  2. Donna Golley says:

Med/high… How long on the Blackstone?

  3. Carrie Barnard says:

    Yes.

  4. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes, this would work great on the blackstone! We love using our blackstone. if you love recipes for your blackstone, check out our other site – https://grillonadime.com/

  5. Kathy says:

Could this be made on a blackstone flat top grill?

  6. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes that is what I mean. You don’t have to, but I like to so it cooks quicker.

  7. Cindy West says:

Are you cutting chicken breasts in half horizontally? Is that what is meant by filleting them? Thanks! Want to make these tonight. Sound yummy!

  8. Dianne says:

Can I sub rice for potatoes

  9. Connie Roberson says:

This recipe is delicious and easy to make. The chicken is so juicy and tender. The potatoes and green beans have such a good flavor. I’ve made this recipe several times and each time it comes out the same. Last time I added onion rings. Yum

  10. Carrie says:

Thanks for sharing! I have used one of those before too and loved it!

  11. Bennie Hooker says:

For those who hate the mess of frying bacon. I always cook my bacon on a microwave bacon pan I found in Bed Bath and Beyond, I think. Had it a long time. Just lay the bacon in the pan, lightly cover with several layers of paper towel. Microware for 1 minute at a time until it cooks to your liking. The pan has raised ridges that keeps the bacon from cooking in the grease. When finished it takes a couple of seconds to drain the pan and put it into the dishwasher.

  12. Carrie says:

    Sounds delicious! Thanks for sharing!

  13. Trina says:

Cooking this for the first time on actual fire coals. Hope it’s as good as in the oven! For you guys asking I cook it in oven at 400 for 40 min. I put the foul packets on a cookie pan. I also use real bacon bits. We had some leftover ham from Christmas. Stick that in too! Yum! And I did dump out the extra liquid I’m love this!

  14. Carrie says:

    I hope you enjoy it!

  15. Carrie says:

I like my bacon crispy so I use cooked bacon. I usually buy the precooked ones that just have to be microwave which causes less of a mess. I hope you enjoy this recipe!

  16. Carrie says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Thank you for sharing!

  17. Karen W says:

    5 stars
My family went nuts for these! I baked them and they turned out awesome! Matter of fact, I’ll be making these tomorrow! Thank you for a great family meal!

  18. Tina says:

Have the recipe printed and only need to pick up bacon and ranch seasoning – both added to grocery list 😉 I like the comment regarding the uncooked bacon, might try that since it’s so messy cooking bacon. Or maybe try those salad topper bacon pieces? Looks and sounds great, thank you!

  19. Rebecca Vermillion says:

This recipe looks amazing! I just got a grill for this summer and this is going to be one of the first recipes I try! Thanks!

  20. Carrie says:

Thank you Tara! I’m so glad your daughter and you loved it!

  21. Carrie says:

    Yes, I love them too!

  22. Peggy Boehling says:

Can you use in a 9 by13 pan instead of the foil packets? What temp would you use in oven and how long?

  23. Angela Blankenship says:

    4 stars
I used this recipe for an after school culinary arts class offered to the students at our high school. Everyone really liked it and the only reason I gave it four stars is because it did take us longer to get it baked than the recipe called for so we were really pushed for time. We had to use the oven, but I am sure that this would be even more tasty on the grill!

  24. Susan says:

I love the foil pocket meals. ADD a little white wine and it’s good too

  25. Margaret says:

    5 stars
This looks delicious and amazingly, I have all of the ingredients!

  26. Tara says:

I made this for me and my (picky) teenage daughter and we both LOVED IT!!! I use your recipes often and always have had amazing results! Thank you for all you do!!! ?

  27. Mya Schwend says:

    5 stars
This was the easiest dinner I’ve made! I made it in the oven and the chicken came out so moist, awesome dinner everyone loved.

  28. Carrie says:

No, I don’t recommend using frozen chicken for this recipe.

  29. Misty says:

Can you use frozen chicken breasts?

  30. Carrie says:

I think that this was probably from the chicken as chicken releases a lot of water while it’s cooking. I generally have a little liquid but not much when making this recipe. You can cook it a bit look and this liquid should cook off or you can drain it after the cooking time. Thanks!

  31. Trina Veerkamp says:

I just made this. But in the bottom of the foil was quite a bit of water?. Kind of yucky? From the Tatoes. Suggestions? Cook them partially before? Thanks

  32. Carrie says:

Let us know what you think! Thank you!

  33. Sylvia kell says:

i AM GOING TO TRY THIS TONIGHT. SOUNDS REALLY GOOD.

  34. Mary Earith-Nielsen says:

husband isn’t fond of chicken breast could you use tri tips instead or some other meat

  35. Colleen says:

How long do you bake in oven and at what temp.?

  36. Kayla Hollenbeck says:

I am making a big patch of this , like 6plus chicken breast ! Would it be better to cook in over at 425 degrees or stuck with the 350 degrees?

  37. Carrie says:

    Good idea!

  38. Donna Radford says:

Very good but a little bland. I used whole chicken breast and draped uncooked bacon over the breast. I will make it again but I will add onion and maybe use Italian dressing.

  39. Julie says:

Was wondering when bakingin the oven do you put on the rack or in a pan?

  40. Ashley says:

Do I need to put the foils on a baking sheet?

  41. retha miles says:

can you use chicken tenders in this recipe

  42. Barbara says:

I made extra, so can I freeze the foil packets?
Then should I defrost before I bake in oven or just cook longer?
Thank you, made them before and they are delicious!

  43. Carrie says:

I try to use approximately 4-5 oz size chicken breasts for this recipe. Thank you!

  44. Catherine says:

This recipe sounds so good. I will be making it tonight. About how many oz. are the chicken breast are you using?

  45. Jen says:

Crystal, how did that work out with the whole beast at 45mins?I’d like to do whole ones as well. Thanks!

  46. Carrie says:

Yes, I would put all the ingredients in the crock pot with the potatoes on the bottom and cook on low for 6-7 hours. Thank you!

  47. Carrie says:

I cook this recipe on direct heat. Thank you!

  48. Carrie says:

Great tip for sharing. Thank you!

  49. Lisa Tofte says:

Use 4 ice cubes in the pockets instead of the butter. Gives you the moisture needed and no extra calories.

  50. Kim says:

Hi Carrie…when cooking on the grill, do you cook on direct heat or on indirect heat?

    Thanks!

  51. Denise says:

Can you cook in a crock pot? How long and what temp.

  52. Carrie says:

I cook these at medium heat. Thank you.

  53. Janintulsa says:

How hot does the grill need to be? High? Med-high? Med?

  54. Carrie says:

Yes, I think that would work great. I would just watch them closely and cook until the potatoes are done. Thank you!

  55. Crystal says:

Am I able to put a whole chicken breast in each pack instead of halves and double the rest of ingredients also? Maybe cook for 45mins instead of 30?

  56. Carrie says:

Yes or asparagus would be delicious too!

  57. Jenn says:

Not a big fan of green beans, do you think broccoli would work?

  58. Carrie says:

Yes, I think that would work and help them cook faster.

  59. Carrie says:

Yes, fresh green beans would be delicious!

  60. Carrie says:

I would cook in the oven at 350 for 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are cooked through. Thank you!

  61. rachel says:

Has anyone tried this in the oven? if so how long and what temp? Thanks

  62. Teresa says:

Can you use fresh green beans?

  63. Denise says:

This is really good! But, I can’t get the potatoes to completely bake through in the oven. Everything else tastes perfect, but the potatoes are not at all done. Can i boil the potatoes first and then add to the tinfoil pack?

  64. Carrie says:

    Great ideas! Thanks for sharing!

  65. Patricia Otter says:

I made mine with thick sliced zucchini instead of potatoes and swapped the ranch mix with a cajun seasoning, so delicious!

  66. Carrie says:

Yes, I think that would be fine!

  67. Carrie says:

Julie – Yes, I think you definitely can. I would probably add some chicken broth with the ingredients in the crock pot so it doesn’t dry out. Thank you!

  68. Carrie says:

Kimberly – I think the asparagus might get overcooked with this one as it needs 30 minutes for the chicken to be cooked through.

  69. Carrie says:

Erin – Yes, I think sweet potatoes would taste amazing in this!

  70. Larry says:

    5 stars
If you like your bacon softer, could you, theoretically, cook it with the rest of it instead of before?

  71. Erin says:

Could you use sweet potatoes instead?

  72. Julie says:

Can you do this in the crock pot?

  73. Kimberly says:

Can I substitute asparagus for the green beens? Or will they over/under cook?

  74. Carrie says:

Chris – I usually make it with the ranch mix as I love the flavor it adds to this recipe. Here is a link to my homemade ranch mix recipe. https://www.eatingonadime.com/homemade-ranch-dressing-mix-recipe/

However, if you don’t prefer this flavor, I think that it would be good with salt, pepper and italian seasoning mix on it as well. Thank you!

  75. Sarah Watkins says:

    Looks so easy and delicious!!!

  76. Chris says:

What could you substitute for the ranch mix?

  77. Brittany H. says:

    5 stars
My whole family (6 of us total) LOVED this dish! I baked it in the over the way you say to and it came out perfectly! Tonight will be the second time in two weeks I’m preparing it! 😀
