How to Make Ground Chicken Burgers

Step 1 – In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken, panko breadcrumbs, beaten egg, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Use your hands to thoroughly blend all the ingredients until they are mixed well.

Step 2 – Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty about 1/2-inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up during cooking with your thumb. Place on a plate lined with parchment paper.
Step 3 – Preheat a grill over medium high heat and oil the grill grates so that the patties don’t stick to the grill. You can also cook on a grill pan.
Step 4 – Add the chicken patties to the grill on direct heat and cook for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are browned and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 165°F.

Step 5 – Remove the chicken burger patties from the grill and let them rest on a plate for a couple of minutes.

Step 6 – Toast the hamburger buns lightly on the grill. Assemble the homemade chicken burgers by placing a chicken patty on the bottom half of each bun and then add your favorite toppings. Place the top half of the bun on the burger and serve immediately.

Recipe Tips
- Oil hands – Ground chicken is softer and stickier than beef. Lightly oiling your hands before forming the patties can make the process easier and prevent sticking.
- Breadcrumbs – Make sure the panko breadcrumbs are finely crushed if they are too coarse. This helps them mix into the chicken mixture better, providing a smoother texture for the patties.
- Combining Ingredients – Mix the ingredients just until combined. Over mixing can make the patties tough once cooked.
Flavor Variations
- Buffalo Flavor – We love the flavor of buffalo sauce so occasionally we like to substitute with Worcestershire Sauce with hot sauce and then brush the burgers with buffalo sauce. Makes for a delicious tangy heat.
- BBQ Cheddar – Once the burgers are cooked, brush with Homemade BBQ Sauce then top with a slice of cheddar cheese. The perfect smoky-sweet flavor.
- Fresh Herbs – This is a great burger to mix in fresh herbs such as fresh parsley, rosemary or thyme.
