Jello cookies recipe

Our kids just love these fun little cookies and they are packed with flavor. Our special ingredient to flavor up these cookies is simply using packages of jello… yes, Jello.

All we are doing is basically jazzing up a regular sugar cookie recipe with jello. The result… pure fun and pure flavor. 🙂 Check out these other easy cookie recipes and this Easy Jell-O Popsicles.

Check out this video to see how easy it is to make this Jello Cookies Recipe!

Once you make these, you will love them. They are just so easy to make and taste amazing.

You can enjoy all that you love about delicious sugar cookies but with a fun twist. Yum!

Now the ingredients are really easy. You probably have all of it in your pantry already.

Ingredients for easy jello cookies:

  • 1 ½ cups butter, softened
  • 4 (3 oz) packages of jello (I used 4 different ones, but you could do 2 of 2 flavors, or 4 packages of 1 flavor.
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • Food coloring, optional (I needed to use some for the grape to brighten the color)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tarter

The kids love to help and have a blast choosing what flavor jello to use.

How to make sugar cookies flavored with Jell-o:

All you do is prepare the batter like you would with normal cookies. Once that is complete you will separate them into 4 bowls (if you have 4 different colors).

Then you are going to pour in the jello package into each bowl. Start kneading the jello into the batter and you will start to see them change colors.

Once all the Jello is mixed in you will then form them into balls, roll them into the left over jello powder, place them on a cookies sheet, and flatten with a glass.

Again… the kids had a blast helping with this part.

Bake and enjoy!

They are really that simple. 🙂

The kids devoured them and loved them in their school lunches.

They are perfect for after school snacks, dessert and anytime! You can’t go wrong with these delicious and easy cookies. So light and fluffy!

Try them today. Make sure to leave us a comment and let us know how they turned out for you!

Can you use SF Jello? I noticed that Jayne substituted half of the sugar, but wasn’t sure if the SF Jello could be used to keep sugar down.

    1. Kathy - Eating on a Dime Team says:

Mary Ann – You can swap sugar free Jello but the flavor will be slightly different, and the color might not be as vibrant.

  2. Mary Kaldahl says:

Correction to my last comment. I meant to say cookie stamp, not cookie press.

  3. Mary Kaldahl says:

For a decorative touch, use a cookie press snowflake design, or design of your choice.

    1. Kathy - Eating on a Dime Team says:

Mary – Thanks for sharing your idea. Sounds pretty!

This worked great! They kind of taste like fruit loops. I tried to get creative and made four different colors then turned those four individual pieces of dough into strips, laying them against each other creating a fat log. I gave the log several twists in an attempt to make a tie-dye cookie. I scooped them out directly from my twisted log and they looked like little balls of rainbow sherbet. They taste great and they came out looking very pretty. I would love to attach a picture of these pretty little cookies, but I can’t figure out how to do that through this rating.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Beth – Thank you so much for sharing. I love the fun twist you made on these cookies! I’m so glad you enjoyed them and thank you for the positive review.

Can this dough be premade and frozen?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes, you can freeze this cookie dough. Learn how to freeze cookies for baking in this post. I hope you enjoy these cookies!

  6. Nancy Martone says:

Can you use the package/pouch of sugar cookies ( Betty Crocker I think) and then add the jello?
Also…are these cookies nice and crisp like sugar cookies or made soft by the jello?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I haven’t tested that yet with the sugar cookie mix so I’m not sure how that would work. If you try it out, please let me know how they turn out. These cookies are a bit softer than a traditional sugar cookie with the add in of the Jello.

This is a great recipe for using my embossed rolling pins with. I also subbed 1/2 the sugar for Stevia. Tasty and pretty cookies.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I love the idea of using an embossed rolling pin.

    2. mary anne lind says:

Thanks Jayne, for trying a lower sugar. Have you tried using SF jello? Not sure it would work, looking for lower sugar for a relative’s diabetes.

  14. Jeffie Dacus says:

I first made these using strawberry and lemon, because they were the only flavors I had on hand and couldn’t wait to try this recipe. They were amazing and were gone in no time. was anxious to get more flavors. Today, I made watermelon, pineapple, raspberry, and green apple. They turned out great. I had 12 of each flavor.

    1. Carrie says:

I’m so glad you enjoyed them! Thank you for sharing!

  15. Jeffie says:

I made these. Only had strawberry and lemon jello on hand. They were terrific. Am going to try the watermelon and pineapple next time, and maybe the peach. Thanks

    1. Carrie says:

So glad you enjoyed them! Thanks for sharing!

  16. ALEXI K PEPMILLER says:

Instead of rolling in extra jello powder, could I roll in sprinkles

    1. Carrie says:

I haven’t tried that yet but I think it would work great!

  17. Margaret Thomson says:

    Hi Carrie,
This recipe looks really wonderful and I would love to make it for myself and my husband. Do you think this recipe would also work for roll and cut cookies? My grown daughter is a celiac and needs to eat gluten free, and I’d like to make her some Valentine hearts this year. Do you think I could just add the jello to a boxed Pillsbury or Betty Crocker gluten free sugar cookie mix? Just wondering. I’m still going to make your recipe for my hubby. Thanks so much!
    Margaret

    1. Carrie says:

Unfortunately, I don’t think that these will roll our well based on the dough for this recipe.

Hi, Love the Jello Sugar cookies. Made red, strawberry and green, lime, and left some plain sugar cookies for Christmas.
Had been promising some for neighbors, were terrific!.
Decorated the plain sugar cookies with special festive touches.
Really looked nice on the plate with the red & green and tasted out of this world. Needed to get away from hubby as he said they were addictive, always want more!
    Thanks so much.
    Happy New Year!
    Stay safe & well!

Hi Carrie, these sound great, I never thought of using jello with cookies but now I can imagine ! Thanks

    1. Carrie says:

They’re so good! I hope you try it out – they are fun to make!

  20. Kathy says:

Could you add the jello powder in with the flour as you are making the dough rather than kneading it in to the dough afterwards?

    1. Carrie says:

I haven’t tried it but I think it would work. I just like to separate the dough at the end so I only have to make 1 batch of dough for multiple colors. Thanks!

  21. Katie says:

I had no idea you could get cookies with such amazing colors! This is definitely something I want to try with my kids this summer.

    1. Carrie says:

They are so fun to make! I can’t wait to hear how you and your kids like them!

  22. Marce says:

Hi! I don’t understand this part: ” Roll the balls into the extra jello powder or in the sugar.”. So….you have to reserve some of the jello powder and then use it for this? is there enough for all the cookies? will this make the flavour and color stronger?

    1. Carrie says:

I only used 2 tablespoons of the jello mix in the cookie dough, so I had some left over that I was able to use to roll the cookie dough balls into it prior to baking. If you don’t have enough left over, just use sugar instead. Thank you!

  23. Glenda says:

Would like to have more of your recipes. this cookies sound great.

    1. Carrie says:

      Thank you!

Just made these! They are a huge hit! Made Berry Blue, Lemon, Orange and Strawberry. The only one that could have done without food colouring was the strawberry but since I was adding to the others, I decided to up the colour factor on those as well.
I will make these again for sure!!!!

    1. Carrie says:

      Awesome – Thanks for sharing.

  25. Jess says:

Can you freeze them? Is it better to freeze the raw cookie dough or cooked cookies?

    1. Carrie says:

Yes, you can freeze them. I would freeze the cooked cookies as the cookie dough will not rise as well after it has been frozen. Thank you.

  26. Liz says:

Would cookie cutters work well with his receipe?

    1. Carrie says:

I think it would. I would definitely try Liz. Make sure you come back and let me know how they turn out.

  27. Christine says:

Do you use sugar free jello or reg. jello?

    1. Carrie says:

      I used regular.

Made these tonight and they r great. Didn’t add food coloring so they were pink instead of strawberry red, but they were delicious nonetheless.

    They sound great.

  32. Raeann says:

Hi Carrie. Although the recipe made 89 cookies, not 36, they really are amazing!!! The flavors are not overpowering, but just a hint. They were a big hit and everybody loved them. Will definately make them again!! Thanks :))

    1. Carrie says:

My cookies must have been much bigger than yours. 🙂 So glad your family liked them.

  34. Debbie Powell says:

These are pretty spring colors, and affordable to make for my Womans Club Bake sale

    1. Carrie says:
