Ingredients

The ingredients required to make this burger recipe prepared on the counter top.
  • Lean Ground Beef – 80/20 ground beef works best because it has enough fat to keep the burgers juicy without making them too greasy. Avoid using beef that is too lean, or the burgers may turn out dry.
  • Worcestershire Sauce – Adds savory flavor and helps give the burgers that classic burger taste without needing a lot of extra ingredients.
  • Garlic Powder – An easy pantry seasoning that adds flavor throughout the burger mixture.
  • Onion Powder – Gives the burgers a mild onion flavor without needing to chop fresh onion.
  • Salt and Pepper – Simple seasonings that help bring out the flavor of the beef. Season evenly, but avoid over mixing the meat.

How to Cook Hamburgers in an Air Fryer

Mixing the ground beef and dry ingredients in a bowl.

Step 1 – First, mix the ground beef and the garlic powder, onion powder, and kosher salt and black pepper together in a bowl. Make sure you do not mix it too much because it will become tough. Just blend it all together enough so the seasonings are well combined.

Four portions of ground beef rolled into balls.

Step 2 – Second, make 4 portions from the ground beef and roll into balls. Form them into patties.

Three burger patties in the air fryer basket.

Step 3 – Next, preheat the air fryer. Add the burgers to the air fryer basket in a single layer.

Cheese on top of two burger patties in the basket.

Step 5 – Finally, cook the burgers for 6 minutes and flip and cook on the other side for another 3 minutes. The burgers need to reach an internal temp of 160 degrees F. If you want cheeseburgers, add a slice of cheese to each burger and let melt for about a minute. Serve on hamburger buns and enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Meat thermometer – Make sure the air fryer burger reaches an internal temperature of 160 degrees at the thickest portion of the burger.
  • Add Seasoning – Don’t skimp on seasoning. It gives the burger so much flavor.
  • Sliders – Make sliders instead of regular size burgers if you have kiddos with smaller appetites. Sliders also work great for parties. Perfect for little hands or when you need smaller portions.
  • Single Layer – Don’t crowd or overlap the burgers in the air fryer. The burgers need to be in a single layer.

Variations Ideas

  • Change Meat – Substitute ground turkey for ground beef for delicious air fryer turkey burgers.
  • Cheese – Add slice cheese to the cook burger patties and heat in the air fryer for a delicious cheeseburger.

Hamburger Topping Ideas

These air fryer hamburgers are even better with your favorite toppings. They are some of our favorites.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Burgers Better in the Air Fryer or Pan?

Cooking burgers in a pan the patties cook in their own fat. But when you air fry them the fat drips in the air fryer pan. The air circulating in the air fryer creates a delicious texture for a crowd pleasing burger. But this is a personal preference on which is better.

How to Cook Burger Patties in the Air Fryer?

Cooking time will vary depending on the size of your burger patty. But these burgers cook in about 10 minutes when the air fryer temperature is set at 370 degrees.

Do I Need to Flip Burgers in the Air Fryer?

Yes, we do recommend flipping the burger after cooking for about 6 minutes. Then continue cooking for about 4 minutes or until burger is cooked through.

Can you cook frozen hamburgers in the air fryer?

Yes, frozen burger patties can be cooked in the air fryer. You may need to add several extra minutes to the cooking time depending on thickness.

Storing and Reheating Tips

  • Storing – Store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator. We recommend storing the burger toppings and buns separately from the patties to prevent the buns from getting soggy. Leftovers will last about 3-4 days.
  • Reheating – We think these burgers are best reheated in the air fryer for a few minutes. But you can also reheat in the microwave.

Recipe Notes

I find that 80/20 beef works best for this recipe to give the best flavor. If you decide to use a lean beef or ground turkey or ground chicken, then reduce the cook time by a few minutes to ensure that the patties do not get overcooked.
Refrigerate any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
The nutritional information just includes the patties not the bun or the toppings for your burgers.

Delicious! Question: have you ever cooked these grim frozen? What was the air fryer temperature used and how long did you cook them? How did they come out? Also, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the great recipes and menus you’ve provided me and my family. I am forever grateful.

      2. Carrie Barnard says:

Thank you so much for your very kind review! You can cook them from frozen as well. I haven’t tried it yet but it should work great! You will need to cook them longer for about 12–16 minutes until the beef is cooked through. If you try it out, please come back and let me know what you think!

  3. Suzanne Branstner says:

I’m intrigued enough to try these. I don’t have a basket air fryer though. Will they work with the rack type and can you think of any changes that might be needed?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

These can be made in the rack style Air Fryer as well and the recipe wouldn’t need to be adapted at all. I hope you try it out and enjoy it.
