Healthy Chicken Salsa Recipe
This Healthy Chicken Salsa Recipe is a super easy chicken dinner recipe. Now I topped mine with cheese, but if you want it healthier then you can top with low fat cheese or cut the cheese in half.
All you need are a handful of ingredients and a little bit of effort and voila! You’ll have a dinner your family will ask for over and over again. Enjoy!
My kids rave about this dinner every time I make it. I know your family will love it too. It’s a great dinner option that requires very little work.
I love my 9×13 baking pan here. It is very frugal and works great for these easy dinners. Now I also like to keep the throw away kinds on hand for those crazy busy evenings when dishes are not on my radar. 🙂
Right now you can see all the baking pans on sale here on Amazon.
What can you make with salsa?
I love cooking with salsa. It is an easy way to add a ton of flavor to the recipes without a ton of work. Also, you can use your favorite type of salsa to add the flavors that you prefer and easily change it up if needed. If your family loves spicy food, then you can stir in a spicy salsa and you know it’ll be a hit with your family!
My family loves any recipe with salsa in it. We all love this healthy baked salsa chicken recipe but we also really enjoy this salsa verde baked chicken recipe and this crock pot salsa verde recipe.
Both of these recipes are affordable but packed with tons of flavor. So after you have tried this recipe, make sure you try either of these recipes.
If you haven’t cooked with salsa yet, I definitely recommend it. It’s an easy way to amplify your favorite recipes!
Baked salsa chicken is a an easy keto chicken recipe!
This salsa chicken recipe is only 7 carbohydrates and 43 grams of protein per serving which makes it perfect if you are following a low carb or Keto diet. Also, it is packed with tons of flavor, so you won’t even miss the carbs in this recipe!
Ingredients need for this Healthy Salsa Chicken Recipe:
- 3 chicken breasts
- ½ package taco seasoning
- 1 cup salsa
- 1 cup shredded cheese
How to make Baked Salsa Chicken:
First preheat oven to 375 F (190 C). Then spray a 9X13 baking dish with non stick cooking spray.
Next cut the boneless skinless chicken breasts in half lengthwise so you have 6 thin chicken breasts. Place the chicken in a single layer in the baking dish.
Then sprinkle chicken with taco seasoning. Pour salsa over chicken. I used medium salsa and it was not too spicy for my little ones.
Bake for 20-30 minutes or until juices run clear and the chicken is cooked.
After this cook time, sprinkle with cheese (I used cheddar) and bake an additional 3 minutes or until cheese is melted.
It really is that super easy to make this keto salsa chicken recipe. It’s only 4 ingredients but paired together they taste amazing! Once you make this chicken and salsa, your family will request it all the time.
How long does it take to bake a chicken breast in the oven?
The baking time for chicken in the oven all depends on the size of the chicken breasts. Generally, I like to cut the chicken in half lengthwise so that it cooks quicker for this salsa chicken recipe.
Based on the size of the chicken, it will take anywhere from 20-30 minutes for the chicken to cook completely. Small chicken breast will take shorter amounts of time and the larger chicken breast will need to more time.
Sometimes, I slice the chicken to ensure that there is no longer any pink in the middle or you can always use a meat thermometer to ensure that it’s fully cooked. I have this one from amazon and I love.
Can you freeze salsa chicken?
Yes, you can definitely freeze this salsa chicken recipe. You can freeze this prior to baking or afterwards whichever you prefer.
If you freeze prior to baking, assembly the chicken as instructed beside the cheese, cover and freeze. When you are ready to bake, defrost in the refrigerator overnight and then continue to cook based on the recipe instructions.
You can also freeze this after it’s cooked. This is a great way to store leftovers so that you can enjoy it on a later day and not waste any food. I would place the leftovers in a casserole dish and cover to freeze. Then just completely defrost prior to reheating so that it can be enjoyed again.
What variations can you make to this easy salsa chicken?

- Add your favorite toppings like sour cream or avocado.
- You can make this recipe with chicken breasts or chicken thighs.

Incredible!!! This is sounding really delicious. Something I am surely going to try out.
Let me know how you like it. 🙂
I made this recipe and it was delicious!! The only problem was the cook time, I had to cook mine for 40 minutes. I may have had larger chicken breast though
That might have been the case. I like to filet my chicken so they cook faster. I’m glad you liked the recipe. 🙂
What goes good with this recipe as a side?
We usually serve it with brown rice and then either zucchini or broccoli.
I love this recipie! I added garlic on top of the salsa for some extra flavor, but it’s a new favorite for week nights!
I made this for dinner last night and it was delicious! We don’t use the oven much (live in our RV) so I made it in our waterless cookware and it looked and tasted perfect. ?
Loved this recipe! Will be making it again.
Question about the meat size. The recipe says cut in half lengthwise, you mentioned in comments filleting them, those seem like two different things. I understood it like fillet as you would a fish so they are flatter, thinner pieces. Is that correct?
Made this yesterday and it came out well. Filleting the chicken is the messiest and most time consuming part. I used a Ziplock bag to coat chicken with the taco seasoning. Much faster and easier to shake them up in there, but took more like 2/3 to 3/4 the packet instead of half. Cooked the chicken for about 23 minutes before adding the cheese for two more. I used a finely grated taco blend (Mexican) cheese. Served with Bush’s already seasoned Black Beans Fiesta and light sour cream. Got everything except the beans for Aldi, so super savings. May just try with regular black beans next time and one stop shop there. Hubby loved it and gobbled up leftovers today. Will make again. Thanks, Carrie!
What brand of salsa do to you Use
