Frequently Asked Questions

Will Steak get Tender in the Crock Pot?

Yes! The cube steak is incredibly tender from being slow cooked all day. It is actually my favorite way to cook this type of meat. The meat is so tender that you can cut it with a fork.

How to Store Leftovers

Store leftover Slow Cooker Cube Steak in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. We like to use our leftovers to make open faced sandwiches. Just use a slice of loaf bread and top with meat, gravy and potatoes. It is the best lunch or dinner idea for the next day.

Can I Freeze Cube Steak and Gravy?

Once cooled, place the leftovers in a freezer safe container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight when ready to reheat in the oven or the microwave.

This recipe is so good! It reminds me of my mom’s cube steak she cooked in her pressure cooker. Such good memories came to me when eating this. I paired with mashed potatoes and broccoli and it was delicious! Thank you for sharing!!

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I love that it brings up good memories for you!

  5. Jamie says:

Can the recipe be doubled or will that overcrowd everything?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

If you have a larger crock pot, it should work great. You just don’t want your crock pot more than 3/4 of the way full.

  6. Emily says:

One of our favorites! Does the calories include the end noodles?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes the nutritional information includes the noodles as well.

Thank you ? for this recipe. Can’t wait to try. I’ve been searching for cube steak without fresh onion. That’s tough ! Everything has fresh onion and my husband can’t tolerate it. Dried is ok …

  7. Rose says:

has anyone tried this with another type of soup or gravy? I have a family member that is allergic to mushrooms.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Any cream based soup would work. I would recommend trying cream of chicken or cream of celery in this recipe instead of the cream of mushroom soup.

  8. Penney Nicol says:

It was yummy. I served it with mash potatoes. Loved using the crackpot so when I got home dinner was ready.

  9. Kristina says:

What can I use instead of mushroom soup. My family hates mushrooms?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Any cream based condensed soup can be used. Cream of Celery or Cream of Chicken would both work in this recipe.

  10. Bob says:

Looks great. It’s a little more prep time but I like to lightly flour and brown the cube steak in a skillet with just a touch of oil. Warm up your onion soup, cream of soup and beef broth mixture in the skillet before adding to the slow cooker, gently scraping the bottom to pick up all that tasty fond.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Thanks for sharing your tips Bob! Glad to know that adding that extra step adds a ton of flavor!

  11. Todd Storch says:

  14. Jill Hetherington says:

I need advice. l have made these before in the Crockpot and just don’t like how they turn out. They seem tough and chewy after 6 hours. Do they need to cook longer? I didn’t fry them before hand. Do you have any advice or recipe recommendations? Thanks

    1. A says:

I have two crockpots and one always cooks like the recipe and the other must cook at a slightly lower temp, because I run into that too. I would suggest two things to make the cube steak more tender a. cook for 2 hours on high then 6 on low and b. dredge the cube steak in flour, salt & pepper and fry for 3 minutes on each side before adding them to the crockpot. Hope this helps!

The gravy this made was so good! I used a can of cream of mushroom with roasted garlic instead of both being cream of mushroom and beefy onion soup mix instead of just the regular onion. Will definitely make again.

  25. Maria says:

Is there a substitute for the dry onion mix have some some that hates onions

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I would use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder or 2 teaspoons of minced garlic instead. The flavor won’t be as strong as with the onion soup mix but it will still taste amazing!

  26. Tina says:

    5 stars
Very simple & delicious! I’ve always cooked my cube steak the same way I learned 50+ years ago, flour & brown the meat, make homemade brown gravy & cooked in a cast iron skillet. This was much less work, strain on my back & legs & easier. Learning to love the crockpot.

  27. Bethany says:

My husband I love this recipe. We don’t add a thickener though, it is thick enough and we like to cook it longer and it’s just so tender. We’re actually having it again tomorrow with mashed potatoes. Yummm

  33. Devon says:

My family absolutely loves this!!!! It is tender and full of flavor.

We love this too. Thank you for commenting.

My husband and I love this recipe. I did change it just a bit. We put the cream of mushroom soup, cup of beef broth and onion soup mix in the crock pot, we don’t add cornstarch because the gravy is thick enough without it. My husband LOVES it with mashed potatoes and green beans. The Texas Longhorns are playing today so that’s in our crock pot to eat after the game. Thank you.

  35. Jeff says:

You list package of onion soup as 2 oz., but a box contains 2 1 oz. envelopes, and you use only 1 envelope in the video.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Sorry for the confusion, I used 1 package so just 1 ounce for this recipe. I have updated the recipe. Thank you.

  36. Patty Piergiovanni says:

It is easy but the meat wasn’t tender at all after cooking on high for 4 hours so really disappointed.

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I prefer to cook beef on low in the slow cooker, but that is just a personal preference.

  37. Aleisha says:

Will the liquids change much is I don’t add the noodles? I like to serve it on mashed potatoes..

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

You should still have plenty of liquid to make a gravy for the mashed potatoes.

  38. Mary Ann Byers says:

I am making this tonight! Can not wait for that deliciousness on my plate! I am going to use potatoes rather than the egg noodles, and my question is when do you think I should add the potatoes? I have redskin potatoes which tend to be a longer cook than other varieties.

Excellent recipe for cube steaks!! Started mine from frozen, and did not have 2 cans of cream of mushroom. So, I substituted with one can of cream of mushroom, and one can of cream of celery. The flavor was very, very good, and the meat was incredibly tender. Will definitely make this again!
