How to Make Pulled Pork in the Instant Pot

Step 1 – First, put all of the ingredients in the instant pot. We have an  8 quart Instant pot and love it. Go ahead and put the lid on and turn the value to sealing.

Step 2 – Second, set the pressure for 90 minutes on high. Do a quick release and remove the lid. Finally, it is time to shred the pork. It is going to be really tender and everyone will think that you slow cooked it.

Flavor Variations

  • Consistency – Stir in more bbq sauce if desired. I like it a little saucy so we normally add more but this is up to you and your preference.
  • Hint of Sweetness – For a hint of sweetness with a spicy kick, add in 2 tbsp of honey with 1 tsp of chipotle sauce or red pepper flakes.
  • Keto – If you prefer to serve this as part of your Keto diet, use sugar free BBQ sauce.

Pro Tips

  • Fat Separator – You can use a fat separator if you want to easily dispose of the excess grease. This will allow you to quickly and easily separate the fat from the bbq sauce. Whenever I am cooking liquid, I use one of these. Just set it aside and you can do it less than 15 minutes.
  • Shredding Pork – Also, this pork is so tender that it easily falls apart. You can use two forks but I like to use my hand mixer to shred the meat. It’s very quick and easy. If you haven’t tried this before, it’s so simple.
  • Natural Release – We recommend doing a natural release instead of a quick release. Using a natural release allows for the pork to be so tender.

    1. Carrie says:

You can make this recipe in the crock pot as well. You can find this recipe here.

  3. Laura says:

How much time would I add if the roast is frozen?
    Thanks!

  4. Jan says:

Do you have any suggestion for the 3 quart instant pot???
How can we modify your large meals for two people???

  5. Joanne says:

This looks great. Would you adjust the time for a smaller roast? Say 3#?

    Thanks.

    1. Carrie says:

Joanne, I would start with 45 minutes and check it from there. If it’s not shredding easily, I would cook it longer. Thanks.

  6. Kate says:

I am just curious about the cooking time. It is listed at 10 minutes but then in the directions it says to cook at high pressure for 90 minutes. Is that supposed to be “9” minutes?

    1. Carrie says:

Kate – I have updated the recipe card to correct the cooking time. The 90 minutes on high pressure is the correct time. These roasts take longer to cook in the instant pot since they are larger. Thank you!
