If you are looking for a simple, budget friendly, and the best flavor chicken recipe then this BBQ Teriyaki Chicken Recipe is the one to make. Other family favorite options are Grilled Chicken Legs and Grilled Buffalo Chicken. If you love the flavor of teriyaki, then you must try Crock Pot Teriyaki Chicken.

Why You’ll Love BBQ Teriyaki Chicken

This recipe blends two cookout must haves – smoky American barbecue and delicious Teriyaki. A fast marinade that soaks into boneless chicken, keeping them tender!

The result is sweet, savory, and tangy chicken with irresistible char marks! Serve it straight from the grill and dice it up to serve on top of salads or Oven Nachos.

Ingredients

  • Chicken Breasts – Try other cuts of meat such as chicken thighs, chicken legs, tenderloin and more.
  • Barbecue Sauce – Try our Homemade Barbecue Sauce
  • Teriyaki Sauce – We used bottled teriyaki sauce
  • Garlic Salt – If you are out, see The Best Garlic Salt Substitute

Helpful Supplies

  • Basting Brush– So handy for adding more of the tasty bbq teriyaki sauce to the chicken during the grilling process.
  • Freezer bag holders – If you are like me, another set of hands in the kitchen would be great. Bag holders to the rescue! We use them all the time when adding food to baggies or doing freezer cooking.
  • Grilling tongs – Grab a set of heavy duty tongs to use on the grill. These will get plenty of use.

How to Make BBQ Teriyaki Chicken on the Grill

A plate with raw BBQ Teriyaki Chicken breasts sits above a bowl of dark marinade with seasonings, next to a metal whisk on a dark countertop.

Step 1 – Mix together the barbecue sauce, teriyaki sauce and garlic salt in a medium bowl. Stir or whisk to make sure everything is well combined.

Step 2 – Add the chicken to a large bowl or gallon size ziplock bag. I prefer to use the bag because clean up is easy.

Step 3 – Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken. I like to marinade this overnight but a few hours will do if you are short on time.

Three raw BBQ Teriyaki Chicken breasts coated in sauce are placed on the grates of an outdoor grill, ready to be cooked. The grill bars are dark and slightly worn from use.

Step 4 – Grill the marinated chicken over medium heat. It may vary based on the size of your chicken breasts but normally takes about 7-10 minutes per side. Just make sure the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees.

Step 5 – Allow the chicken to rest before serving. 5 minutes should do it. Enjoy! It is optional but sometimes we top with sesame seeds and green onion.

Grilled BBQ Teriyaki Chicken is inexpensive, quick and always a crowd pleaser. Give this tender and flavorful chicken a try for a great dinner.

Pro Tips for Juicy Chicken

  • Chicken Breast Size – I like to grill chicken about the same size for even cooking. You may need to filet the chicken so that all your chicken is the same thickness.
  • Marinade – Toss the marinade that you used for the chicken. Use reserved teriyaki sauce to top the chicken when serving for even more flavor.
  • Instant-Read Thermometer – To ensure your chicken is fully cooked and you do not overcook the chicken, use a meat thermometer to check internal temperature.

Flavor Variations

  • Spicy – For a hint of spice, add in 1 tbsp of sriracha sauce or red pepper flakes for a kick of flavor.
  • Sweetness – If you prefer a hint of sweetness add in 2 tbsp of brown sugar or honey.
  • Soy Sauce – I love adding in a 1 tablespoon of soy sauce to balance out the flavors.
