What is a Tostada?

Tostada is a flat shell that is crispy but is still loaded with your favorite taco toppings. It is different from a taco that is soft and folded around the ingredients.

  • Change Meat – Feel free to use other types of meat to make these tostadas. Easy Crockpot Taco Meat or Crock Pot Pulled Pork are great options.
  • Cheese – Use cheese of your choice. Cotija cheese, Colby Jack Cheese or Queso Fresco are great options to top these tostadas.
  • Vegetables – You can omit the meat and make a veggie tostada.

How to Make Chicken Tostadas

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 1 – Place the tostada shells on a baking sheet.  Bake for 3-5 minutes until the tostadas are warmed through.

Step 2 – Heat the refried beans and shredded chicken in either the microwave or on the stovetop until both are warmed through. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the shredded chicken, salsa and taco seasoning.

Step 3 – Then prepare the tostadas.  Spread a thin layer of the refried beans onto each tostada shells.

Step 4 – Top each one with the shredded chicken mixture, both shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, avocados, cilantro and a dollop of sour cream. Serve each one immediately while warm and enjoy!

  • Make Ahead – Prepare the topping ahead of time and learn how to freeze onions and also how to freeze peppers to save so much time in the kitchen.
  • Tortillas – We usually buy tostadas already prepared at the grocery store. But you can also make your own with corn tortillas. We recommend using thin tortillas.
  • Cook Chicken – If you are starting with cooked chicken breast, easily shred it with a hand mixer. Another easy option is to shred it with two forks.

Recipe Notes

You can bake regular corn tortillas until crispy to make your own tostadas if you can’t find any at your store.
For the shredded chicken, you can use any leftover chicken you have in the refrigerator, store bought shredded rotisserie chicken or make your own shredded chicken in a crock pot. 
Crock Pot Instructions: 
If you do not have cooked shredded chicken, you can easily make the chicken in the crock pot. Place raw breasts chicken, salsa and taco seasoning in a crock pot.  Cook on low for 6-8 hours (or on high for 3-4 hours) until the chicken is easily shreddable.  Shred the chicken and then assemble the tostadas based on the instructions.
