Diced seasoned steak in a skillet with a wooden spoon

Step 2 – Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the seasoned steak cubes and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Transfer the browned steak to the crockpot.

Diced onions with garlic in a skillet with a wooden spoon

Step 3 – In the same skillet, add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds, until fragrant. Transfer the onion and garlic to the crockpot.

Steak and potatoes in the slow cooker

Step 4 – Pour the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce into the crockpot. Add the dried thyme and stir to combine. Arrange the halved baby potatoes around the steak in the crockpot.

  • Step 5 – Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6-8 hours, until the steak is tender and the potatoes are cooked through.
  • Step 6 – Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.

Expert Tips

  • Gravy Consistency – If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can remove the steak and potatoes from the crockpot once they’re done cooking, and then whisk together 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water. Stir this mixture into the crockpot and cook on high for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened.
  • Cooking Time – If you prefer, you can cook on HIGH for 3-4 hours, but the meat won’t be as tender. Cooking time will vary but we like to cook on low for the best tender steak.

Serving Suggestions

Slow Cooker Steak and Potatoes make mealtime a breeze. You can easily serve as it but we like to add these side dishes for a complete meal idea.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you Brown Steak before Putting in Crock Pot?

Browning steak cubes before adding to the slow cooker is not a require step, we like to because it adds flavor and texture.

What Steak is Best for Slow Cooker?

We like using sirloin steak, round steak or a chuck roast and cut it into small bite size pieces. You can also use beef stew meat as it is already cut, which will save you a step.

How to Store Leftover Steak and Potatoes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5-6 days.

How to Reheat Leftovers

Reheat leftovers in the microwave or place in a baking dish and reheat in a preheated oven at 350 degrees.

Can I Freeze Steak and Potatoes?

The steak will freeze great in a freezer safe container for up to 3 months. The potatoes may not turn out as well after thawing.

Oh my heck I made this steak and potato in crockpot and my family went nuts over it! I recommend cooking it on low/slow for the most tender fall apart steak you have ever had! The worsteshire sauce and beef broth work so well together to really bring all the best flavors together and the potatoes are just the right softness so they are tender but not mushy! I loved making this as it was simple yet great tasting. I did use beef stew meat as it saves a step but mostly because it is very versatile and proves just that in this recipe. It came out so tender that it nearly melted in my mouth. The potatoes were also quite delicious. I plan on making this every couple of weeks

    1. Kathy - Eating on a Dime Team says:

      So glad to hear this!

I’ve tried your steak bites. A real favorite. I recently tried a casserole with pounds browned hamburger, 32 ounce frozen hashbrowns, A can of cream or mushroom soup and a can of cheddar cheese soup.It made a 9×12 and fed my family of 6. Maybe you can adjust it for a slow cooker?

  113. Mary Guenther says:

    Can I use canned potatoes?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Mary – I haven’t tested it yet but I think it would work. I do think that the canned potatoes will cook faster than the fresh potatoes so you may want to reduce the cook time in the crock pot so that they don’t get over cooked.

  114. Anastasiya Barry says:

Can I use sweet potatoes instead of the baby potatoes

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Yes, sweet potatoes should work great in this recipe. I recommend peeling them and dicing them in large pieces.

  115. Ross Carmichael says:

Do you have recipes for smaller crock pots 2 quart slow cooker thank you love your shadow I learned a lot

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

I don’t have any recipes designed specifically for a 2 crock pot except for some of our crock pot appetizer recipes but most of these I would recommend being made in a 4 quart crock pot. This recipe can be made in a smaller crock pot and just use half of the ingredients.
