I love foil pack recipes because there isn’t any cleanup! This recipe for grilled potatoes in foil is SO easy and the potatoes taste absolutely amazing.
Plus, you can grill this or bake it. So if the weather does not suit for grilling, just pop this in the oven. Easy!

There is literally no clean up at all!
Grilled potatoes in foil ingredients:
- 6 Russet Potatoes
- 1 Onion
- 6 Tbsp Butter
- 1 ½ tsp Salt
- 1 ½ tsp Pepper
How to grill potatoes in foil:
Peel the potatoes and slice into 1/4” thick slices. Next, Peel and thinly slice the onion.
Place foil on the counter and spray with a non-stick cooking spray. I used 1 piece of foil per each potato.
Place the potatoes and onion slices on the foil. Season each packet with approximately ¼ tsp of the Salt and Pepper and top with 1 Tablespoon of the butter.
Fold each foil packet close and seal tightly.
How Long to Cook Grilled Potatoes?
Grill over medium-high heat for 30-40 minutes until the potatoes are soft.
Remove the heat, be careful when opening the foil packet and enjoy!
You can also bake the foil packet at 375 degrees F for 40-45 minutes until the potatoes are cooked through.

Can I use different potatoes?
Yes, you certainly can. Other options include red potatoes, Yukon gold, fingerling potatoes and baby potatoes.
They all taste delicious but the texture may vary based on what type of potato you use.
I often will use what I happen to have or can get on sale at the store. This is how I keep our grocery budget reasonable.
I have never met a potato I didn’t like. 🙂

Seasoning variation ideas:
These really are amazing with just a little salt, pepper and butter. You can also try using seasoning salt or garlic powder on the potatoes.
If you like ranch flavor, try a little dry ranch dressing mix. Italian seasoning is also good. Paprika is another favorite.
Topping ideas:
Parmesan cheese and green onion is also really good on the potatoes.
The kids love shredded cheese and bacon bits on top. The possibilities are endless!
I like to dip the potatoes in ranch or drizzle some on top. Yum! Sour cream is also good on top.

These are so easy. I usually omit the onions and double the butter. I use Tony Chachere’s or Cavenders Greek seasoning on mine. They are so moist and delicious!!
