Why You’ll Love Using Your Crockpot in Summer

When life gets busy during the summer, my slow cooker helps make dinner one less thing I have to worry about.

Most people think of slow cookers as a fall and winter appliance, but I honestly use mine just as much during the summer.

Here are just a few reasons why:

  • Keeps the kitchen cooler than using the oven.
  • Dinner cooks while you’re enjoying your day.
  • Perfect for busy nights after the pool, baseball games, or family activities.
  • Uses affordable ingredients that fit almost any grocery budget.
  • Great for feeding a crowd without spending all day cooking.
  • Many recipes make enough for leftovers, helping stretch your grocery dollars even further.

My Favorite Summer Crockpot Tips

  • Double your favorite recipes and freeze half for an even easier dinner later.
  • I always prep my slow cooker before leaving for the pool so dinner is ready when we get home.
  • Keep a bag of frozen chicken breasts on hand for quick meals.
  • Use slow cooker liners when you know you’ll be busy—they make cleanup so much easier.
  • Fresh herbs, avocado, and shredded cheese added at the end make simple meals taste special.

After making slow cooker meals for my family for over 25 years, I’ve picked up a few tricks that make summer cooking even easier.

My Best Tips for Summer Slow Cooking

  • Prep Everything the Night Before – If mornings are hectic, chop the vegetables and measure out the ingredients the night before. In the morning, all you have to do is add everything to the crockpot and turn it on.
  • Choose Lighter Proteins – Chicken, pork loin, turkey, and lean beef all cook beautifully in the slow cooker and are perfect when you want something lighter for warm weather.
  • Add Fresh Ingredients at the End – Fresh herbs, green onions, shredded cheese, avocado, and fresh tomatoes taste best when added just before serving.
  • Double the Recipe When You Can – Many of these recipes freeze beautifully. I love making extra so we have another easy dinner ready for those extra busy weeks.
  • Let Your Slow Cooker Do the Work – One of my favorite things about crockpot cooking is that I don’t have to stand over the stove. I can enjoy the day with my family while dinner practically makes itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really use a crockpot during the summer?

Absolutely! A slow cooker uses much less heat than turning on your oven, which helps keep your kitchen cooler. It’s one of my favorite ways to make dinner during the hottest months of the year.

What are the best meats for summer crockpot recipes?

Chicken, pork loin, pulled pork, turkey, and lean cuts of beef all work wonderfully. They’re flavorful without feeling too heavy for warm weather.

Can I prep these recipes ahead of time?

Yes! Many of these recipes can be assembled the night before or frozen into meal prep bags so they’re ready to dump into the slow cooker whenever you need an easy dinner.

Are these recipes budget-friendly?

Definitely. Saving money is always my goal. I use simple, affordable ingredients that are easy to find at your local grocery store without sacrificing flavor.

What should I serve with crockpot dinners?

Fresh summer sides pair perfectly with these meals. Some of my favorites include watermelon, corn on the cob, pasta salad, fresh fruit, garden salads, baked beans, and homemade coleslaw.

Can I freeze leftovers?

Most of these recipes freeze beautifully. Let the food cool completely, store it in an airtight container or freezer bag, and freeze for up to three months for another easy meal.

Love your variety of useful and tasty crockpot recipes. Wondering how to judge when a dish is ready when it says , for example, on low for 8-10 hours for a recipe you made with flank steak for tacos? And how on earth do you keep your kitchen so clean when you are cooking? When I’m done cooking , it can look like a tornado blew thru my kitchen! Watching you work in an orderly fashion is a big help for my ADHD (naturally disorganized) mind! Many thanks for all the effort and two sisters put into your channel?

    1. Carrie Barnard says:

Jill – Thank you so much! Your sweet comment absolutely made my day. ??

For recipes like the flank steak tacos that have a range of 8–10 hours on low, I always start checking at the earlier end of the cooking time. Every slow cooker cooks a little differently, so the exact time can vary. The flank steak is ready when it’s fork tender and shreds easily. If it’s still a little tough or doesn’t shred without resistance, just put the lid back on and let it cook another 30–60 minutes before checking again.

As for my kitchen…trust me, it doesn’t always look like it does on camera! ? I try to clean as I go—putting ingredients away, loading the dishwasher, or wiping down the counters whenever I have a few spare minutes while something is cooking. That keeps the mess from piling up. And don’t worry—there are definitely days when my kitchen looks like a tornado came through too!

Thank you again for your kind words and for following along. It truly means so much to us that you’re here, and we’re so glad our videos and recipes are helpful!
